About the Project
We are bringing Moriz Nähr into the present.
Idea
Moriz Nähr (1859-1945), who had an inspiring artistic friendship with Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), was regarded as THE innovator of photography in “Vienna 1900”. His oeuvre includes portraits, views of the city and nature as well as architectural and interior views of innovative exhibition scenes. His most famous photographs are those of Gustav Klimt and his Viennese studios, whose documentary character allows intimate insights into the painter's world. The House of Habsburg, the Wittgenstein family and the Vienna Secession were also among Nähr's clients.
In recent years, the non-profit Klimt Foundation, headed by Peter Weinhäupl and Sandra Tretter, together with the photo historian Uwe Schögl and renowned researchers, has examined the extensive photographic work of the autodidact. The work culminates in the first catalogue raisonné of Moriz Nähr's photographs.
Objective
The comprehensive catalogue raisonné with a contemporary user interface is aimed at both the interested public and experts worldwide. New photographs by Moriz Nähr are constantly being added to the catalogue raisonné, making it an innovative and fundamental research tool on Nähr's photographic oeuvre. At the same time, the catalogue functions as a documentation of Viennese art and urban history and the photographic aesthetics of the turn of the century.
Access
The Moriz Nähr catalogue raisonné can be used after a one-off, free registration. It can be accessed via standard browsers as well as mobile devices.
Search
Based on the structure of the research directories in the Gustav Klimt database, over 2,000 photographs will currently be available in the digital catalogue raisonné. Different filters including a search guide allow for focused research. In addition, an interactive map offers in-depth opportunities to explore Nähr's oeuvre cartographically.

Source Material
One of the foundations of this online catalogue raisonné is a significant part of the photographer's estate, consisting of glass negatives and original prints, in the possession of the Klimt Foundation. In addition, Nähr photographs from around 40 other institutions and collections, such as the Austrian National Library, the Wien Museum, the Fotografis Collection and the Belvedere, have also been included.
